3M Vehicle Paint Protection

What is Paint Protection Film?

A clear film that protects your vehicles painted surface from damage, Paint protection film is 150 micron optically clear urethane film. Being a urethane product rather than vinyl wrap or plastic it has the inherent strength and durability you would expect from the product.

Used for:

  • Stone Chip Protection
  • Debris impact damage prevention
  • Protection from abrasion
  • Car protection films help to keep the value of the car
  • Keeps your vehicle looking better for longer

Advanced technology can boost resale value and customer satisfaction

  • Super tough - Transparent urethane film helps protect paint from stones, sand, road debris, bug acids and other harsh conditions that mar that new car finish and eat away at your customers investment. It helps to safeguard vulnerable painted surfaces like the leading edge of the hood, bumper, door edges and trunk ledge.
  • 3M Paint Protection Film is made of tough, transparent and conformable urethane for long-term durability, and it can be treated like any painted surface. This enables your vehicle lines and colour brilliance to show through without compromising the appearance, increasing pride of ownership.
  • The high-performance, pressure-sensitive adhesive used to attach 3M film ensures excellent adhesion to OEM paints, yet is removable if needed. This prevents costly field failures while allowing for removal without damage to fully cured paint.
  • Scotchgard™ film features a clear coat with ultraviolet (UV) protectants that counteract harmful UV rays and resist yellowing. Businesses can be assured that Scotchgard™ film maintains its high-gloss look with minimal care, while helping to keep vehicles looking better longer.

F&Q

Will Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film harm the painted surface if the film is removed?

If the film is properly applied to a fully cured painted vehicle, it can be removed, usually in one piece, without damaging paint surfaces beneath the film.

Can Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film be applied over a vehicle that has had the paint touched up?

3M recommends that any repainted surfaces on your vehicle be professionally painted and fully cured before applying paint protection film. If you have touched up scratches or chips with a tube of "touch-up" paint and then apply paint protection film over it, the film will protect that area until it is removed. If the paint protection film is removed, it is possible that the area around the non-professional touch-up paint could peel off.

Will the paint smear if Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film is applied over a newly painted vehicle?

The paint on a newly painted vehicle must be cured according to manufacturer's recommendations. Your body shop should be able to provide you with this information.

Can you paint or apply a clearcoat over the Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film?

No, this is not recommended and is at your own risk. 3M film is supplied with an OEM-approved clearcoat which is not formulated to be over-printed, painted or clearcoated.

Can I cover the whole vehicle with Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film?

It is possible, but the application would be difficult and expensive. This product is really intended for the most vulnerable areas of the vehicle.

Can Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film be applied over graphics?

The clear film will not interfere with vinyl or painted graphics and is designed to match the gloss levels of today's automotive factory clearcoat paint systems, providing virtually invisible protection. However, if the Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film is removed, damage may occur to the underlying graphic during the removal process.
