WODONGA motorists with illegally darkened windows on their cars have been warned the modifications put them and other road users at risk. Acting Sgt Mal Burdett, of Wodonga highway patrol, said his team issued defect notices for illegal tints on vehicles two to three times a week.
His colleague, Sen-Constable Stewart Smith, said vehicles with tinted windscreens, which are prohibited, or windows that aren’t in accordance with VicRoads requirements, were unroadworthy. “Drivers must have the best possible vision of the road and surroundings, and any reduction in driver vision will lead to a reduction in safety, particularly in adverse weather and light conditions,” he said. “Highway patrol units across Victoria will enforce these provisions, and any driver not complying with the (VicRoads) standards risks a defective vehicle notice and a fine of $299.”
Pro Tint owner Rod Magill said after a recent roadworthiness blitz in Wodonga by the city’s highway patrol, his Thomas Mitchell Drive business had processed about a dozen vehicles needing illegal window films replaced with lighter versions.
“It’s an issue for visibility from within because the darker the film is, the harder it is to see out of, particularly of a night,” Mr Magill said. Mr Magill said tints of any darkness were forbidden from being placed on windscreens and any films used on non- commercial vehicle windows in NSW and Victoria had to have a visible light transmittance of at least 35 per cent. The lower the visible light transmittance, the darker the film. “Whether they’re cars brought in from Melbourne or Sydney, I don’t know,” Mr Magill said of the cars in Wodonga that sported illegal tints. “None of them have been our work.”
